How to adjust my brakes

How do I know my brakes need adjusting?

Stand next to your bike, squeeze the front brake lever and try to push the bike forward. The rear wheel should lift and the lever shouldn't touch the handlebar. Now repeat this test with the rear brake. The rear wheel should lock and skid as you push the bike forward. If either brake isn't working properly, then you may need to adjust the tension in your brake cable.

Repair Instructions

Find the barrel adjuster on the brake caliper. To increase cable tension, turn the barrel adjuster anti-clockwise. Try one full turn initially, then half turns, repeating the brake test periodically. After performing each brake test you may also want to look directly down through the caliper to make sure that the brake pad is not touching the rotor. If it is, then you have over tensioned the cable and will need to release some tension by turning the barrel adjuster clockwise. Once you have finished adjusting the barrel, and are happy with the position of the brake pads, screw the locknut flush to the caliper to keep the barrel firmly in its new position.
